Thousands of protesters gathered Saturday in Rome‘s Ostiense Square, defying a police ban to mark one 12 months of Israeli assaults on the Gaza Strip.
Demonstrators chanted slogans in opposition to Israel and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and expressed solidarity with Palestinians.
The protest turned violent when demonstrators tried to depart the sq., the place police blocked exits, which led to clashes with safety forces.
Police responded with pepper spray and water cannons after protesters threw bottles.
Italian media reported at the very least three protesters and 30 safety personnel have been injured, together with 26 law enforcement officials.
