Roman mosaics unearthed during rescue excavations in S. Türkiye

Archaeologists have lately found mosaics believed to be from the Roman period throughout a rescue excavation undertaken within the rural expanse of southeastern Mardin, roughly 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the district heart, colloquially often called Kela Hanma (Lady’s Castle).

Following studies of illicit excavations and the destruction of the architectural cloth within the space, researchers delved into the location to uncover historical treasures hidden beneath the bottom.

Under the management of Abdulgani Tarkan, director of the Mardin Museum, and the experience of archaeologist Volkan Bağcılar, together with Museum knowledgeable archaeologist Mehmet Şan and a devoted group, a rescue excavation was initiated on Oct. 2.

Teams from the Diyarbakır Restoration and Conservation Regional Laboratory Directorate additionally contributed to this exceptional enterprise.

The excavation revealed mosaic ground tiles belonging to a Villa Rustica, a rural settlement enclosed by partitions, comprising a central construction together with smaller auxiliary buildings distributed round it.

The mosaic ground, measuring roughly 100 sq. meters, exhibited intricate designs depicting fish scales, triangles, hexagons, octagons, arch formations, bushes, waterfowl, octopuses, fish, mussels, seals and aquatic plant imagery.

Director Abdulgani Tarkan highlighted the importance of the findings, emphasizing that this Roman settlement within the forested space between Kızıltepe and Artuklu districts is not only a rural villa; it encompasses numerous architectural remnants, together with residing quarters and a necropolis courting again to the fifth to seventh centuries.

“These mosaics, adorned with animal figures and rare sea creatures like octopuses and various fish species, are distinctive in this region. Our priority is to preserve these historical relics to prevent further deterioration,” Tarkan emphasised.

Plans are underway to rigorously take away and exhibit these unparalleled mosaic artifacts on the museum, showcasing this newfound chapter of Mardin’s wealthy historic narrative.
