Pope Francis has rejected a million-euro donation from the defence trade, the Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported in Friday’s version.

The Vatican declined a donation of €1.5 million ($1.6 million) from the Italian defence firm Leonardo, the newspaper mentioned.

It was solely in his Christmas tackle that the top of greater than 1.4 billion Catholics had castigated the defence trade as a battle profiteer.

According to the corporate, the donation was supposed for the Vatican’s Bambino Gesù paediatric hospital to buy new medical tools. The cash has now gone to a paediatric clinic in Genoa.

With greater than 50,000 staff and an annual turnover of round €15 billion, Leonardo is without doubt one of the world’s largest defence corporations. The Italian state holds a 30% stake within the agency.

In his Christmas tackle, Francis accused the trade of making the most of wars and conflicts.

He spoke of “machinations of evil that oppose the divine light, in the shadow of hypocrisy and secrecy.” The pursuits and earnings of the “masterminds of wars” have to be made public, he mentioned.

According to La Repubblica, the donation was to be made at Christmas.

The newspaper reported that the “no” from the Vatican got here as “no small surprise” to the corporate’s prime administration.
