At least 94 individuals have been killed, 50 others wounded on Wednesday when a gasoline tanker exploded in northern Nigeria, police confirmed.
Many of the victims had been attempting to gather gasoline spilled on the highway after the tanker crashed in northern Jigawa state late Tuesday, police spokesman Lawan Shiisu Adam informed AFP.
The tanker had veered to keep away from colliding with a truck within the city of Majia, he mentioned.
“We have so far confirmed 94 people dead and around 50 injured,” he mentioned, warning the dying toll may rise.
Following the crash, residents crowded across the car, gathering gasoline that had spilled on the highway and in drains, Adam mentioned.
He mentioned the residents had “overwhelmed” officers attempting to cease them.
The Nigerian Medical Association has urged docs to hurry to close by emergency rooms to assist with the inflow of sufferers.
Fuel tanker explosions are widespread in Africa’s most populous nation, the place roads could be poorly maintained and residents usually look to siphon off gasoline following accidents.
