US designates Haitian gangs as foreign terrorist organizations

The US State Department on Friday designated a coalition of Haitian gangs as overseas terrorist organizations, citing their position in driving violence and instability throughout the Caribbean nation.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the Viv Ansanm coalition—which incorporates over two dozen closely armed gangs—and the Gran Grif gang at the moment are listed as each Foreign Terrorist Organizations and Specially Designated Global Terrorists.

“The age of impunity for those supporting violence in Haiti is over,” Rubio stated in an announcement, “They are a direct threat to U.S. national security interests in our region.”

According to Rubio, the teams have killed civilians, focused Haitian safety forces and worldwide personnel, and purpose to overthrow Haiti’s authorities to determine a gang-controlled state.

Haiti has for years been within the grips of armed avenue gangs that perform murders, kidnappings, rapes and different crimes. It is at present run by a transitional authorities.

Gangs are stated to manage 85% of the capital Port-au-Prince.

The present violence has continued regardless of the deployment of a world safety pressure led by Kenya in assist of Haitian police.
