Dozens of British mosques and Muslim teams despatched a joint letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, welcoming the pause in U.Okay.-Israel commerce talks and urging extra decisive motion on Palestine.
The letter on Thursday follows Foreign Secretary David Lammy’s announcement on Tuesday that the U.Okay. is suspending free commerce settlement negotiations with Israel and summoning the Israeli ambassador.
Faith leaders and establishments, together with the London Central Mosque Trust, the Islamic Academy of Manchester, and the Association of Muslim Scholars in Great Britain, stated they “welcome the transfer, whereas warning it doesn’t go far sufficient.”
“For over eighteen months, we’ve got witnessed harrowing scenes of insupportable human struggling and destruction in Gaza,” the letter states.
“It is abundantly clear, that opposite to worldwide humanitarian legislation, Israel is utilizing hunger as a weapon of struggle towards a defenseless civilian inhabitants.”
The signatories criticized what they describe as a “morally inexcusable failure” to deliver sufficient aid into Gaza, warning of “inhumane, agonizing and preventable deaths” amongst hundreds of malnourished youngsters.
They urged the federal government to take substantive motion on 4 key factors: reinstating a ceasefire, ending the blockade of Gaza, recognizing the state of Palestine, and halting arms gross sales to events violating worldwide legislation.
“We are profoundly concerned by the U.K. government’s failure to act determinedly,” the statement reads, accusing the government of not adopting “a constant, agency and principled stance” towards struggle crimes and “collective punishment.”
The letter continues: “The utility of worldwide legislation can’t be selective. Human rights, non-discrimination, and anti-racism have to be common… A way forward for warfare, void of authorized and moral duties, units a harmful precedent.”
Calling for motion rooted in “justice, accountability and sustained diplomatic engagement,” the groups expressed hope that the government “will act on these most pressing issues.”
“We should decide to a peace course of grounded in justice, equality, and worldwide legislation,” the letter concluded.
Rejecting worldwide requires a cease-fire, the Israeli military has pursued a brutal offensive towards Gaza since October 2023, killing over 53,800 Palestinians, most of them girls and kids.
Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, for struggle crimes and crimes towards humanity in Gaza.
Israel additionally faces a genocide case on the International Court of Justice for its struggle on the enclave.
