The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on Thursday demanded pressing measures to handle a major rise in avian influenza instances within the Asia-Pacific area.

Key suggestions embody enhanced surveillance programs, fast diagnostics, cross-sectoral collaboration, strengthened biosafety within the poultry business and elevated public consciousness.

Citing latest outbreaks in Cambodia, China, and Vietnam, FAO’s regional supervisor Kachen Wongsathapornchai emphasised the urgency of the measures.

The FAO reported 13 new human instances of avian influenza in Cambodia, with extra instances detected in China and Vietnam.

The extremely pathogenic H5N1 pressure has unfold to South America and Antarctica, infecting new animal species, together with marine mammals and scavengers.

“The emergence of novel A/H5N1 strains, which are more easily transmissible, increases the pandemic threat. Immediate, coordinated preventive measures are essential,” added Wongsathapornchai.

FAO is a specialised company of the UN that leads worldwide efforts to defeat starvation.
