India captain Sunil Chhetri stated Thursday he’ll retire from worldwide soccer aged 39, ending a record-breaking profession for his nation spanning twenty years.

The attacker has hit 94 targets in 150 appearances for India, behind solely Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi within the listing of lively worldwide goal-scorers.

He can also be India’s most-capped participant.

In a video message on social media platform X, Chhetri stated the 2026 World Cup qualifier in opposition to Kuwait in Kolkata on June 6 will likely be his final worldwide outing.

“It’s not that I was feeling tired, not that I was feeling this or that,” he stated.

“When the instinct came that this should be my last game, I thought about it a lot (and) eventually I came to this decision,” he stated.

India are second in qualifying Group A with 4 factors, behind Qatar.

“The game against Kuwait demands pressure, we need the three points to qualify for the next round. It’s hugely important for us,” the skipper stated.
