In California, some pedestrian crossings south of San Francisco had been focused by hackers. Fake messages impersonating Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg had been heard from pedestrian crossings in Menlo Park, Palo Alto, and Redwood City.
Authorities introduced that the voice-guided methods had been disabled and an investigation has been launched. Normally offering alerts like “walk” or “wait,” the methods delivered sudden messages over the weekend.
In the recordings, Musk’s voice was imitated, providing a Tesla Cybertruck in change for a friendship supply. Another pretend recording, supposedly from Zuckerberg, featured the phrase “Real friends call me The Zuck.”
One of the pretend messages imitating Musk greeted individuals in Palo Alto, saying, “They say money can’t buy happiness… I think it’s true. God knows, I’ve tried.” Another Zuckerberg imitation talked about “integrating AI into every aspect of your consciousness.”
The affected crossings had been shut down. California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) spokesperson Pedro Quintana acknowledged that about 10 crossings in Menlo Park and Palo Alto had been affected and their handbook buttons had been disabled, switching to a timer system.
Meghan Horrigan-Taylor from the Palo Alto City Hall reported related interventions at no less than 12 crossings within the downtown space, noting the problem was detected on Saturday, seemingly occurring on Friday.
Both tech billionaires haven’t made public statements concerning the incident. Authorities are investigating how the voice methods had been hijacked, with the problem restricted to just some crossings and no different signaling methods compromised.
