A SpaceX rocket safely lifted off from Florida on Sunday night time carrying a crew of three U.S. astronauts and a Russian cosmonaut on their strategy to the International Space Station (ISS) to start a six-month science mission in Earth orbit.

The two-stage Falcon 9 rocket topped with an autonomously operated Crew Dragon capsule dubbed Endeavor was launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, alongside Florida’s Atlantic coast, at 10:53 p.m. EST (0353 GMT Monday).

A reside NASA-SpaceX webcast confirmed the 25-story-tall rocketship ascending from the launch tower as its 9 Merlin engines roared to life in billowing clouds of vapor and a reddish fireball that lit up the night time sky. The rocket consumes 700,000 gallons of gas per second throughout launch, in keeping with SpaceX.

The Falcon’s higher stage delivered Endeavor to its preliminary orbit 9 minutes after liftoff, with reside video from the cabin displaying the 4 crew members strapped in facet by facet garbed of their helmeted white-and-black flight fits.

“What an incredible ride to orbit,” astronaut Matthew Dominick, 42, the flight commander and certainly one of three spaceflight rookies aboard the capsule, radioed to manage outdoors of Los Angeles. “A big thank-you to SpaceX.”

“Really honored to fly this new-generation spaceship with this new-generation crew,” NASA veteran Dr. Michael Barratt, 64, chimed in from his seat beside Dominick.

The 4 crew members had been scheduled to achieve the area station early on Tuesday after a 16-hour flight, docking with the orbital laboratory some 250 miles (420 km) above Earth.

Designated Crew 8, the mission marks the eighth long-duration ISS crew that NASA has flown aboard a SpaceX launch car because the non-public rocket enterprise based in 2002 by billionaire Elon Musk and headquartered close to Los Angeles started sending U.S. astronauts to orbit in May 2020.

The newest ISS crew was led by Dominick, a U.S. Navy check pilot making his first journey to orbit, and Barratt, a doctor who has logged two earlier flights to the area station and two spacewalks. Barratt is serving as mission pilot.

Rounding out the crew are fellow NASA astronaut Jeanette Epps, 53, an aerospace engineer and former technical intelligence officer for the CIA, and cosmonaut Alexander Grebenkin, 41, a former navy plane engineer. Both he and Epps, like Dominick, are spaceflight rookies.

Grebenkin is the most recent cosmonaut to fly aboard a U.S. spacecraft beneath a ride-sharing deal signed in 2022 by NASA and the Russian area company Roscosmos, regardless of heightened tensions between Washington and Moscow over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Crew 8 can be welcomed aboard the area station by seven present ISS occupants – three Russians and the 4 astronauts of Crew 7, two from NASA, one from Japan and one from Denmark. The Crew 7 crew is predicted to depart the area station for a flight again to Earth a couple of week after Crew 8’s arrival.

Crew 8 is predicted to stay aboard the area station till the top of August, collectively performing about 250 experiments within the microgravity atmosphere of the orbital platform.

The ISS, in regards to the size of a soccer discipline and the biggest human-made object in area, has been constantly operated by a U.S.-Russian-led consortium that features Canada, Japan and 11 European international locations.

The first {hardware} for the outpost was launched 25 years in the past. It was conceived partially as a multinational enterprise designed to enhance relations between Washington and Moscow following the Soviet Union’s collapse and the top of Cold War rivalries that gave rise to the unique U.S.-Soviet area race within the Fifties and Sixties.

NASA has mentioned it’s dedicated to preserving the area station in operation for no less than six extra years.
