The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry not too long ago initiated a research to establish the issues in 400 fishing ports throughout the nation consistent with the request of the General Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture.

Ismail Önden, an professional at TÜBİTAK’s Industry and Shipping Management Institute, highlighted vital points plaguing roughly 10% of fishing ports in pressing want of restore throughout Türkiye. Citing prevalent issues similar to insufficient leases, administrative operational hurdles, safety lapses and unauthorized development, Önden make clear the challenges confronted inside the fishing port infrastructure.

In a complete research involving the examination of 400 fishing areas throughout the nation and interviews with fishermen, Önden detailed the in depth groundwork performed. “We surveyed potential fishing shelter locations, identifying around 400 key points for detailed interviews. While there are officially 384 fishing shelters, the total coastal structures surpass 500, including unregistered and natural shelter spots. Our focus narrowed to the 400 most vital locations,” Önden defined.

He emphasised the mapping of the ecosystem inside the venture’s framework and the evaluation encompassing legislative elements, zoning standing assessments and complete stock creation. “We have completed essential groundwork by analyzing the current situation, including legislation, zoning status and presenting detailed maps. This also entailed categorizing problems and needs, unveiling the entire inventory and determining the zoning status of structures,” Önden added.

Identifying recurring challenges, together with rental constraints, administrative points, safety issues and unauthorized constructions, Önden emphasised the need for a complete legislative decision. Furthermore, infrastructural and superstructural points like shoaling, sanding issues, inadequate capability, dysfunctional breakwaters, wave disruptions and associated issues have been highlighted.

Addressing these challenges, Önden burdened their cyclic nature and the impression on fishing actions, capability shortages, incidents, theft and product high quality. “Despite appearing as infrastructural problems, these ultimately intertwine and lead back to systemic dimensions, as some shelters significantly contribute to income generation,” Önden emphasised.

Expressing that half of the research is accomplished, Önden outlined the importance of those findings in formulating future insurance policies and devising a strategic roadmap to handle the recognized points comprehensively.
