A jail break within the Saint-Marc area of western Haiti resulted in a conflict that left 11 inmates lifeless on Friday, police mentioned.
Haiti National Police spokesperson Michel Ange Louis Jeune mentioned the conflict occurred as inmates tried to flee from the jail that housed 540 inmates.
Jeune confirmed that 11 inmates have been killed throughout the incident, and one inmate was recaptured.
Local newspaper Le Nouvelliste mentioned jail guards had gone on strike demanding higher working situations, which could have performed a job within the escape.
Government commissioner Vension Francois expressed considerations of a possible “mutiny,” suggesting the opportunity of guard complicity.
Videos circulating on social media captured scenes of smoke and fireplace billowing from the jail, with gunfire reported close by. The variety of inmates held on the jail on the time of the escape stays unclear.
