At least 13 persons are confirmed to have been killed and 178 others injured following a huge explosion and fireplace at a gas depot in Guinea‘s capital Conakry, authorities stated Monday.
“Some 178 people were treated with varying injuries including 10 in private facilities. Of the 178 people, about 50% sustained minor injuries and were discharged,” Oumar Diouhe Bah, the well being minister, instructed a press convention within the capital Conakry.
“Unfortunately, in the two national hospitals, we registered 13 deaths including two victims who died on arrival around midday.”
Noting that “the situation is under control,” Bah stated some folks with slight accidents had been handled on the scene of the tragedy by well being personnel deployed after the incident.
The incident occurred at round midnight on Monday within the nation’s Kaloum administrative district, authorities spokesman Ousmane Gaoual Diallo instructed reporters.
“The fire was followed by a very huge explosion that damaged some nearby infrastructure. Many buildings were blown away. The main hospitals, Ignace Deen and Donka, were immediately mobilized to take care of the victims, the number of whom will be communicated during the day,” he stated.
The explanation for the explosion on the depot that provides many of the gas in Guinea has but to be established.
In an announcement, Col. Mamadi Doumbouya, who was sworn in as transition president following a army coup in September 2021 that deposed President Alpha Conde, prolonged condolences to the households of the victims and to the folks of Guinea, whereas wishing a speedy restoration to the injured who he stated are being absolutely cared for by the state.
“While awaiting the investigations carried out by the government to find out the exact causes of the fire as well as the human and material toll of this tragedy, I take this opportunity to appeal to the people of Guinea for solidarity and prayers for the nation in these difficult times,” he stated.
Diallo stated the federal government had taken emergency measures together with evacuation of residents who dwell close by.
