At least 10 individuals have been killed, 9 others have been injured after a gunman, recognized as a scholar, opened hearth on a college campus in Czechia’s capital Prague on Thursday.
The shooter was eradicated, in line with police.
Prague rescue service stated on X that the incident occurred within the constructing of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University, situated on Jan Palach Square.
“The gunman was eliminated!!! The building is currently being evacuated and there are several dead and dozens of wounded people on the scene,” police stated on X, previously Twitter.
An e-mail to workers on the Faculty of Arts of Charles University, seen by Reuters, had stated a shooter was in one in all its buildings and had advised workers to “stay put”.
“Don’t go anywhere, if you’re in the offices, lock them and place furniture in front of the door, turn off the lights,” the e-mail stated.
In movies circulated on social media, gunshots could be heard and a big police presence could be seen.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed her “deepest condolences” following the incident.
“I express my deepest condolences to the families of the victims and to the Czech people as a whole. We stand and mourn with you,” she stated on X.
