Azerbaijan and Armenia agreed Thursday to place further efforts to conclude a peace treaty that’s being mentioned between the 2 neighbors.
Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and his Armenian counterpart, Ararat Mirzoyan, met in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly conferences, in accordance with an announcement by the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry that mentioned the talks had been held on the initiative of U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and the events agreed to conclude negotiations “in the shortest possible period.”
“The Azerbaijani and Armenian sides expressed their gratitude to the Secretary of State for organizing the meeting,” it added.
The U.S. State Department mentioned Blinken recommended each ministers on the progress made towards peace and inspired their international locations to finalize an settlement “as soon as possible.”
“The Secretary underscored that a peace agreement would bring increased stability and prosperity to the region,” it mentioned.
Relations between Baku and Yerevan have been tense since 1991 when the Armenian navy occupied Karabakh — a territory internationally acknowledged as a part of Azerbaijan, and 7 adjoining areas.
Most of the territory was liberated by Azerbaijan throughout a 44-day battle within the fall of 2020, which ended after a Russian-brokered peace settlement that opened the door to normalization and the demarcation of their border.
