Boats capsize off Djibouti, drowning 45 migrants in Red Sea

At least 45 individuals had been killed Tuesday when two migrant boats from Africa sank off Djibouti’s coast within the Red Sea, the U.N. migration company reported.

The boats had departed from Yemen carrying 310 individuals, the International Organization for Migration mentioned.

Thousands of migrants from African, Middle Eastern and South Asian nations in search of a greater life in Europe try irregular migration yearly.

The U.N. company, helping search and rescue efforts, mentioned on the social media platform X that 32 survivors had been rescued.

Djibouti’s coast guard mentioned the tragedy struck some 150 meters (about 500 toes) off a seaside close to the northwest Khor Angar area. It mentioned a joint rescue effort was underway, which started early Monday. It mentioned 115 survivors had been rescued.
