Colombian President Gustavo Petro has declared a “National Disaster” in response to extreme flooding and landslides brought on by heavy rains throughout the nation. Speaking with related officers on the National Unified Command Center in Bogotá, Petro acknowledged that the declaration goals to expedite help to households affected by the floods.
Petro emphasised the nation’s ongoing battle with the problems introduced on by local weather change, noting that many areas throughout Colombia have been severely impacted by the floods.
According to an announcement from the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD), 46,000 households have been adversely affected by the heavy rains, and emergency declarations have been issued within the areas of La Guajira, Huila, Choco, Norte de Santander, and Cauca.
Social media footage confirmed highways within the northern a part of Bogotá submerged by floodwaters, with quite a few autos ready to be rescued.
In response, President Petro introduced that UNGRD will allocate 2.5 billion Colombian pesos (570,000 USD) by two Collective Investment Funds (FIC) to help the municipalities most affected by the floods.
