EU set to make contributions to US-led Red Sea security coalition

The European Union has agreed to make a contribution to the U.S.-led coalition to take care of maritime security within the Red Sea amid ongoing Houthi assaults on industrial vessels.

“At the extraordinary Political and Security Committee (PSC) meeting today, member states have agreed to contribute to the U.S. Operation Prosperity Guardian,” EU international coverage chief Josep Borrell stated on X on Wednesday.

Borrell added that “irresponsible Houthi actions are a threat to freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.”

The EU will intensify info sharing, and improve its “presence with additional naval assets,” he defined.

Meanwhile, Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias introduced Thursday that Greece too will dispatch a frigate to contribute to the U.S.-led operation within the Red Sea, in response to the general public broadcaster ERT.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin introduced earlier this week the creation of a multinational naval activity drive to counter Houthi assaults on industrial vessels within the Red Sea.

According to the U.S. announcement, to date NATO nations the U.Ok., Canada, France, Italy, Norway and the Netherlands have pledged help for the “Operation Prosperity Guardian” to defend service provider ships transiting between Asia and Europe.

Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have considerably stepped up their involvement within the present battle within the Gaza Strip by focusing on vessels within the southern Red Sea, saying the transfer got here in solidarity with “the Palestinian resistance in the Gaza Strip.”
