The separatist South Ossetia area in Georgia is planning to carry a referendum on becoming a member of Russia, an official was quoted as saying on Sunday.
“When we, along with Russia, come to this concept (about becoming a member of the Russian Federation), we are going to do it,” Alan Alborov, the top of the breakaway area’s parliament, informed the state news company RIA in response to a query about the potential of holding a referendum on this matter.
“We are discussing all these points in shut coordination with the Russian Federation, making an allowance for our bilateral relations and agreements,” Alborov stated.
In 2008, a five-day battle broke out between Georgia and Russia over the breakaway areas of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
Tbilisi finally misplaced management of each areas, which Russia later acknowledged as unbiased states.
In response, Georgia lower off diplomatic relations with Russia, prompting Switzerland to step in as a mediator.
Both areas are nonetheless internationally acknowledged as Georgian territories.
