International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Karim Khan held discussions on Friday with Syrian authorities on how the battle crimes tribunal may assist in their efforts to prosecute crimes allegedly dedicated within the nation, his workplace stated.
Khan was invited to Syria by the transitional authorities, which took over after former President Bashar al-Assad was toppled in December.
Khan met with Syria’s de facto ruler Ahmed al-Sharaa to debate how the ICC prosecutors may help the Syrian authorities of their efforts “towards accountability for alleged crimes committed in the country”, his workplace stated.
The ICC, which has 125 member states, is the world’s everlasting court docket to prosecute people for alleged battle crimes, crimes towards humanity, genocide and aggression.
Syria shouldn’t be a member state, however may settle for the ICC’s jurisdiction as a primary step, Khan informed Reuters in an interview on Thursday.
Such a step would mirror the motion Ukraine took in quest of accountability for alleged Russian battle crimes.
“Some of the remarks coming out of Syria by the transitional government seem to have indicated an openness to justice and accountability for crimes that may have taken place,” Khan stated within the interview.
“I think we’re happy to take part in the conversation to tell them the options that they have.”
