Man gets 3.5 years in prison for burning Quran in Russia’s Chechnya

A Russian man was sentenced Tuesday to three 1/2 years in jail for burning a Quran within the Russian area of Chechnya.

A courtroom within the capital Grozny handed the sentence to 20-year-old Nikita Zhuravel, who was detained in May 2023.

He was prosecuted below a regulation towards offending spiritual believers’ emotions after he burned a replica of the Quran outdoors a mosque in Volgograd, 800 kilometers (500 miles) from Grozny.

Russian investigators transferred his case to Chechnya. The Investigative Committee, which handles severe crimes, mentioned this was as a result of they acquired many messages from Chechnya residents asking to be designated injured events.

Chechnya has a Muslim-majority inhabitants and its pro-Kremlin chief Ramzan Kadyrov is Russia’s foremost Muslim chief.

State news company TASS reported that Zhuravel pleaded responsible to the costs, repeatedly apologized in courtroom, and mentioned he had not thought concerning the penalties of his actions.

The Investigative Committee claimed that he was paid to burn the Koran by Ukrainian intelligence.

Russia launched its regulation towards offending the sentiments of spiritual believers in 2013 as a part of the Kremlin’s flip towards conservative social values.
