As the previous Yugoslavia started to disintegrate within the early Nineteen Nineties, Kosovo Albanians turned uneasy about rising Serbian nationalism and laid the foundations for the Kosovo Liberation Army (UCK), which might later play an essential function within the nation’s independence.

As clashes between Serbs and the UCK broke out in 1998, Serbian navy, police and paramilitary forces killed many civilians in a number of villages populated by Albanians.

The assaults by Serbian forces in Kosovo ended with NATO bombing the previous Yugoslavia on account of a 78-day operation in 1999, and Serbian forces withdrew from Kosovo.
