The command of NATO‘s Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 2 (SNMCMG-2), answerable for naval mine operations and coaching within the Mediterranean, Black Sea, and Aegean, has been transferred from Romania to Türkiye.
At a Monday ceremony held on the Mine Fleet Command within the Turkish coastal metropolis of Erdek, Naval Capt. Kürşat Kurnaz assumed the command from Romania’s Capt. Sebastian Barote.
Türkiye will lead the group for the seventh time till subsequent July 5.
During the ceremony, Kurnaz acquired the SNMCMG-2 Commodore pennant aboard the flagship TCG YZB Güngor Durmuş.
Rear Adm. Stefan Pauly, the chief of operations for NATO’s Allied Maritime Command, recommended Türkiye’s important contributions to NATO and regional safety.
He thanked the outgoing commander and welcomed Kurnaz, expressing confidence in his management.
Over the previous six months, the mine countermeasures group has efficiently prevented threats, carried out clearance operations, and demonstrated excessive ranges of professionalism, embodying NATO’s “strength and its dedication to ensuring peace and stability,” stated Pauly.
Kurnaz expressed pleasure in main such a succesful pressure and pledged to meet all obligations with professionalism and dedication to NATO values.
He emphasised that the alliance would proceed to try for operational excellence and reinforce its collective safety, expressing his appreciation for Barote’s management.
Barote highlighted the group’s achievements below his command and stated it will thrive below Turkish command.
The pressure exemplifies NATO’s maritime capabilities and its united dedication to securing and defending maritime borders.
Speaking to the press, Kurnaz outlined the group’s mission as the primary response pressure towards potential naval mine threats in NATO waters. Established in 1999, the unit operates constantly to keep up readiness.
Under Turkish command, the group will take part in 5 main NATO workouts, together with Spain’s Dynamic Mariner and different mine warfare drills in Italy and Greece.
Türkiye will hand over the command to Italy subsequent July.
