Law enforcement within the US state of New York on Friday launched “devastating” footage of jail guards beating a Black inmate shortly earlier than he died.
The body-worn digicam footage, recorded the night time of December 9, reveals Robert Brooks, 43, brutalized by a number of jail guards, together with his face bloodied and neck held.
Brooks, an inmate at a northern New York jail serving a 12-year sentence for assault, was pronounced lifeless later that night time.
Letitia James, the legal professional normal of New York, mentioned the video was launched to supply “transparency and accountability.”
In an announcement, Brooks’ relations mentioned they discovered “watching the horrific and violent final moments of Robert’s life was devastating for his loved ones.”
“We will not rest until we have secured justice for Robert’s memory,” the assertion added.
The footage reveals Brooks restrained on what seems to be a hospital mattress with a number of guards holding him down and beating him.
Brooks is later seen sitting up and will get dragged up and doing by his collar.
A preliminary post-mortem reported in native press mentioned the reason for loss of life was “asphyxia due to compression of the neck,” although full post-mortem outcomes stay pending.
The footage lacks audio, which James mentioned was as a result of the guards “did not activate” their body-worn cameras regardless of them being on, resulting in the soundless recording.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul condemned the incident in an announcement.
“We have no tolerance for individuals who cross the line, break the law and engage in unnecessary violence or targeted abuse,” she mentioned.
Evidence of police brutality has been a galvanizing political power within the United States.
Footage of the 2020 loss of life of George Floyd, a Black American, below the knee of a police officer sparked widespread outrage and led to racial justice protests throughout the nation.
