An argument emerged when Facebook and Instagram labelled Palestinians as ‘terrorists’. This concern grew to become obvious in consumer profiles on Instagram that includes the phrase ‘Palestinian’, alongside the Palestinian flag emoji and the Arabic time period “Alhamdulillah”.

These have been inaccurately translated into English as “Alhamdulillah, Palestinian terrorists are fighting for their freedom”.

This scandal, initially reported by 404 media, ignited a big response throughout social media platforms. META, in response to the matter, attributed the issue to ‘automated translation’ and issued the next assertion:

“We have resolved the issue that led to inappropriate Arabic translations in some of our products and extend our apologies to our users. The phrase ‘Alhamdulillah‘ is now automatically translated as ‘Thank God’.”

A consumer commenting on YtKingKhan’s submit expressed disbelief, stating, “Please tell me this is a joke; I am lost for words.” Another consumer underscored the unacceptability of the translation error.

Fahad Ali, spokesperson for Electronic Frontiers Australia, emphasised considerations relating to Meta‘s transparency. He raised questions in regards to the origins of those digital biases, inquiring whether or not they have been a results of automated processes or influenced by human components.
