Poland blocks Hungarian envoy from attending opening of EU presidency

Poland introduced it had excluded Hungary’s ambassador from the opening gala of its EU presidency as a result of a diplomatic dispute involving a former minister—a transfer Hungary described as “pathetic and childish.”

In December, Hungary gave refugee standing to Polish lawmaker Marcin Romanowski who had served as deputy justice minister within the earlier right-wing authorities led by the Law and Justice (PiS) get together.

Facing corruption prices and an arrest warrant, Romanowski had fled Poland for Hungary, which is ruled by PiS ally Viktor Orban, and was granted political asylum there.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski referred to as the transfer a “hostile act.”

“Following the situation around Romanowski, Minister Sikorski sent a note to the Hungarian ambassador saying he was not a welcome guest” on the Polish EU presidency opening gala, Poland’s deputy European affairs minister Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka instructed the TVP state broadcaster.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto referred to as the choice “pathetic and childish,” in response to a press release despatched to AFP.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and European Council President Antonio Costa are anticipated to attend the occasion held in Warsaw as Poland replaces Hungary on the bloc’s helm for a six-month rotating presidency.

Ties between Warsaw and Budapest have soured since Poland’s October 2023 legislative elections, which ousted the PiS authorities from energy and ushered within the pro-European coalition led by Tusk.

Polish prosecutors have charged Romanowski with 11 offenses, together with participation in an organized crime group and tried embezzlement of funds totaling nearly 40 million euros ($41 million) from a fund for crime victims, which he supervised.

Polish officers arrested Romanowski in July however his detention was later deemed unlawful by the courts as a result of he had parliamentary immunity as a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) and he was launched.

He disappeared in early December after PACE revoked his immunity and a courtroom ordered his arrest.
