According to stories within the Indian press, the preliminary investigation into the crash is being led by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) of India and is predicted to conclude with a last report inside 12 months. The investigation includes U.S. plane producer Boeing, engine maker General Electric, the airline Air India, and civil aviation consultants.
The publicly launched preliminary report reveals that preliminary findings point out the gas provide to the plane’s engines was interrupted shortly after takeoff. Data retrieved from the plane’s black field reveals that, simply seconds after takeoff, the gas management switches for each engines had been moved from the “run” place to “cutoff,” inflicting each engines to close down and the plane to lose thrust.
Cockpit voice recordings cited within the report seize one pilot asking the opposite, “Why did you shut it off?” to which the opposite responds, “I didn’t shut it off.”
Although the gas management switches had been later returned to the “normal flight” place and the engines routinely tried to restart, just one engine was in a position to regain thrust—although not sufficient to stabilize the plane, the report stated.
The report underscores that reducing gas to the engines is a process usually carried out after touchdown or in emergencies like an engine fireplace. Executing it throughout takeoff is taken into account “highly unusual.”
The preliminary report concludes that there have been no structural defects within the plane or its engines. It states: “Based on current findings, no special warnings or additional precautions are required for Boeing 787-8 aircraft or General Electric GEnx-1B engines.”
