Russia has detained one other senior navy official on suspicion of bribery, authorities stated Monday, the newest in a string of arrests linked to alleged corruption within the defence ministry.
Major General Valery Muminjanov, who labored within the defence ministry’s sources division, helped prepare state contracts for personal corporations that provided military uniforms, in line with investigators.
“For the above assistance he received a bribe of a particularly large amount totalling over 20 million rubles ($223,000),” Russia’s Investigative Committee stated.
“During the investigation it was established that Muminjanov and his family members own numerous real estate properties in Moscow and Voronezh worth more than 120 million rubles, the legality of which is being checked,” it added.
He faces as much as 15 years in jail if convicted.
Moscow has arrested at the very least 10 navy officers since April, a part of what analysts have referred to as a “purge” of inefficient or corrupt military leaders amid Russia’s Ukraine offensive.
In May, President Vladimir Putin changed longtime defence minister Sergei Shoigu with Andrei Belousov, an economist, broadly seen as a bid to make the armed forces extra economically environment friendly.
The defence ministry has been marred by repeated corruption scandals for the reason that collapse of the Soviet Union, an issue that has come beneath intense scrutiny since Moscow launched its offensive in Ukraine.
Last week, former deputy defence minister Pavel Popov was arrested on fraud expenses linked to the development of an army-themed amusement park outdoors Moscow.
