Syrian safety forces have neutralized Hassan Ibrahim, a cell chief linked to remnants of the deposed Bashar Assad regime, within the western metropolis of Latakia, the Interior Ministry introduced Tuesday.
Special safety models tracked and positioned Ibrahim and members of his gang after intensive surveillance, the state news company SANA mentioned, citing Latakia Security Chief Mustafa Kunaifati.
“The cell chief instantly engaged our forces, resulting in his instant neutralization together with these with him,” he mentioned.
The Syrian safety official mentioned Ibrahim’s group was behind the March 3 assassination of two safety officers.
“We will spare no effort in pursuing and putting with an iron fist all terrorist teams which have attacked or plan to assault our civilians and safety forces,” Kunaifati vowed.
The operation follows a surge of unrest on Syria’s coast on March 6, when coordinated assaults by Assad loyalists hit safety patrols and checkpoints, killing and injuring personnel. Subsequent safety sweeps and clashes restored stability.
Assad, Syria’s chief for almost 25 years, fled to Russia on Dec. 8, ending the Baath Party’s regime, which had been in energy since 1963.
Ahmed al-Sharaa, who led anti-regime forces to oust Assad, was declared president for a transitional interval on Jan. 29.
