Türkiye plans to develop its indigenous multi-layered air defence system, dubbed the Steel Dome, authorities have introduced.
A defence business committee assembly, chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in Ankara has authorised the “Steel Dome Project, which we are developing locally,” Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz introduced on social media platform X late Tuesday.
The program goals to combine a community of sensors and weapons, supported by synthetic intelligence (AI), Yilmaz stated, calling the mission a “historic decision”.
“We are determined to bring our country to a much stronger position against all kinds of threats,” he added.
State broadcaster TRT on Wednesday cited works on a four-layered defence system, from brief to long-range, offering a real-time situational alert.
The program`s brief and middle-range programs are already in navy stock, the report added.
Türkiye has lengthy been investing closely within the home defence business. In February, Ankara unveiled its first locally-developed fight plane.
It has individually been testing numerous ranges of ballistic missiles since 2023.
