Ukraine opens war crime probe over reporters death

Ukrainian prosecutors stated on Friday they’d examine the loss of life of a Ukrainian journalist in Russian detention as a warfare crime.

Victoria Roshchyna, who would have turned 28 this month, disappeared in August final 12 months after travelling to Russian-held east Ukraine on a reporting journey.

She remained lacking till April 2024, when her father acquired a letter from Moscow’s defence ministry saying she was being held in Russian detention, in response to Ukraine’s primary journalist union.

The circumstances of her arrest weren’t made public and it was not clear the place she was being held inside Russia.

Petro Yatsenko, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s jail of warfare coordination headquarters, confirmed her loss of life in detention on Thursday.

“In connection with the information about the death of Ukrainian journalist Victoria Roshchyna in Russia, the criminal proceedings opened over her disappearance have been reclassified as a war crime combined with premeditated murder,” the Prosecutor General’s workplace stated Friday.

Press rights group Reporters Without Borders stated on social media it was “shocked” by Roshchyna’s loss of life and provided condolences to her kinfolk.

Russian news outlet Mediazona reported she died whereas being transferred to Moscow from a jail in Taganrog, close to the Ukrainian border.

Thousands of Ukrainians against Moscow’s rule have been detained in occupied territories since Russia’s invasion started in 2022, lots of whom face torture by the hands of safety forces, in response to rights teams.
