UN chief condemns Gaza divisions that ‘paralyzed’ Security Council

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres Sunday condemned the divisions which have “paralyzed” the Security Council after its failure to demand a cease-fire within the Gaza Strip.

Addressing Qatar’s Doha Forum, Guterres stated the council was “paralyzed by geostrategic divisions” that had been undermining options to the Israel-Hamas battle that began on Oct. 7.

The physique’s “authority and credibility were severely undermined” by its delayed response to the battle, he stated two days after a U.S. veto prevented a decision calling for a Gaza cease-fire.

“I reiterated my appeal for a humanitarian ceasefire to be declared,” he instructed the discussion board.

“Regrettably, the Security Council failed to do it,” he added.

“I can promise, I will not give up.”

Guterres had convened an emergency assembly of the U.N. Security Council after two months of preventing which have left greater than 17,700 individuals useless in Gaza, most of them girls and kids, based on the territory’s Hamas-run well being ministry.

“We are facing a severe risk of collapse of the humanitarian system,” Guterres instructed the Doha Forum.

“The situation is fast deteriorating into a catastrophe with potentially irreversible implications for Palestinians as a whole and for peace and security in the region,” he added.
