The UN Security Council adopted a decision Wednesday condemning and demanding an instantaneous halt to assaults by Yemen’s Houthi insurgent group on ships within the Red Sea.
The draft decision submitted by the U.S. and Japan was authorised with a vote of 11 in favor, zero in opposition to and 4 abstentions, together with Russia.
Before the voting, Russia proposed amendments to the draft decision, however they had been rejected.
The Houthis have focused vessels within the southern Red Sea and warned they are going to assault all Israel-bound ships. They say the assaults are to assist Palestinians as they face Israel’s “aggression and siege” in Gaza.
The Red Sea is likely one of the world’s most ceaselessly used sea routes for oil and gasoline shipments.
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin not too long ago introduced the creation of a multinational mission — Operation Prosperity Guardian — to counter the Houthi assaults.
