The UN on Thursday urged all events to chorus from rising tensions following China‘s launching of large-scale army workouts surrounding the self-governing island of Taiwan and its neighborhood.
“We’re following the developments in the Taiwan Straits closely,” UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric stated at a news convention.
Dujarric stated the UN operates in China based on a General Assembly resolution in 1971.
China introduced the beginning of large-scale army workouts three days after the inauguration of Taiwan’s new chief Lai Ching-te. China has a sovereignty dispute with Taiwan.
Taiwan, which China claims as a part of its territory, has had de facto independence since 1949. The separation between mainland China and Taiwan persists.
In current years, Beijing has elevated army stress on Taiwan, emphasizing it could not rule out the usage of drive to reunite the island with the mainland.
