US monitoring Russian vessels in Cuban waters: Pentagon

The US is monitoring a fleet of Russian warships which can be in Cuban waters for navy workouts, the Pentagon mentioned Wednesday.

“These are routine naval visits that we have seen underneath completely different administrations. We’re at all times continuously going to watch any overseas vessels working close to US territorial waters.

“We, of course, take it seriously, but these exercises don’t pose a threat to the United States,” spokeswoman Sabrina Singh instructed reporters.

Her remarks got here after the ships, together with a nuclear-powered submarine, arrived in Cuban waters forward of navy workouts within the Caribbean.

“I think what’s important here is that what Russia is doing in these exercises,” mentioned Singh.

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan instructed reporters individually that the workouts are routine.

“We have seen these Russian naval deployments sailing into Cuba in the Bush administration, the Obama administration, the Trump administration, and now the Biden administration,” he mentioned, including that the US is watching “closely and carefully.”
