The Trump administration is near reaching an settlement to de-escalate tensions between Israel and Syria following a wave of Israeli airstrikes on Damascus, Axios reported Wednesday, citing a senior U.S. official.

The report comes as U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio instructed reporters on the White House that he anticipated progress “within hours” towards calming the scenario.

According to Axios, the United States requested Israel once more on Wednesday to halt its strikes on Syria and as an alternative pursue dialogue with the federal government in Damascus.

The report didn’t make clear whether or not the request was made earlier than or after Israeli forces struck Syria’s army headquarters and areas close to the presidential palace earlier within the day.
