The United States has returned to Iran greater than 1,000 clay tablets relationship from the Achaemenid-era, official media stated, reporting the sixth such handover of its type.

Iran’s official IRNA news company stated Thursday night that the tablets, 1,100 in all, had been returned with President Masoud Pezeshkian who had attended the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Found on the ruins of Persepolis, the capital of the Persian Achaemenid Empire which dominated from the sixth to 4th centuries BC in southern Iran, the repatriated tablets replicate how the traditional society was organised and its financial system managed.

The tablets represent data of “the rituals and the way of life of our ancestors“, stated Ali Darabi, vice-minister of cultural heritage, cited by IRNA.

The tablets had been returned to Iran by the University of Chicago‘s Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures, West Asia & North Africa, previously generally known as the Oriental Institute.

A big portion of the tablets had been returned in three batches between 1948 and 2004 earlier than the remaining had been blocked by authorized motion till 2018.

More than 3,500 tablets had been repatriated in September, 2023.

“The American side undertook to return the rest,” Darabi stated, cited by Iran’s ISNA news company.
