In the South American nation of Ecuador, voters on Sunday are casting their ballots to elect their new president.

With a inhabitants of practically 18 million, over 13 million voters in Ecuador began casting their ballots at 4,390 polling stations throughout the nation as of seven a.m. native time (1200GMT).

Voting will proceed till 5 p.m. native time (2200 GMT).

The election race is between 45-year-old leftist candidate Luisa Gonzalez, supported by former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa’s celebration, and the National Democratic Action Alliance candidate Daniel Noboa, a former Congressman.

Diana Atamaint, the president of the National Electoral Council, referred to as on the folks to vote. “Today, democracy wins, Ecuador wins,” she mentioned.

Facing an unprecedented safety disaster in current months, authorities have deployed roughly 100,000 troopers and cops for election safety.

Some 300 worldwide observers are reportedly current to observe the polls.
