Kremlin says Canada must bring Nazi veteran to justice

The Kremlin mentioned Wednesday {that a} Ukrainian Nazi veteran inadvertently honoured within the Canadian parliament final week must be delivered to justice and recommended that he be extradited.

The speaker of Canada’s parliament resigned following the incident, which noticed lawmakers publicly applaud 98-year-old Ukrainian veteran Yaroslav Hunka who fought for the Nazis throughout World War II.

“Canadian authorities have a duty to bring to justice — or to extradite to those who wish to bring to justice — this criminal,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov informed reporters.

Poland mentioned Tuesday it was taking a look at extraditing the veteran, and investigating whether or not Hunka — who fought for an SS unit — and was wished for crimes in opposition to Poles or Polish Jews.

Russia has accused Ukraine’s management of harbouring Nazi components, regardless of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky being Jewish and dropping relations within the Holocaust.

It has seized on the incident within the Canadian parliament.

“It is unequivocal that we are talking about a Nazi,” Peskov mentioned.

Canada is house to the world’s second-largest Ukrainian diaspora.

Zelensky, who spoke to Canada’s parliament final week, expressed thanks for Ottawa’s backing since Moscow launched full-scale hostilities in opposition to Ukraine final 12 months.
