Malawi authorities launched a search operation after a army aircraft carrying the nation’s vice chairman and 9 others went lacking on Monday.
The aircraft carrying Vice President Saulos Chilima left the capital, Lilongwe, however did not make its scheduled touchdown at Mzuzu International Airport about 370 kilometers (230 miles) to the north round 45 minutes later.
Aviation authorities misplaced contact with the aircraft when it “went off radar,” the assertion from Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera’s workplace stated.
“All efforts by aviation authorities to make contact with the Aircraft since it went off the radar have failed thus far,” Malawi’s Office of the President and Cabinet stated in an announcement.
Chilima, 51, was aboard a Malawi Defense Force plane that left the capital Lilongwe at 09:17 a.m. (0717 GMT), it stated, including that search and rescue operations had been ongoing.
The plane had been scheduled to land at Mzuzu International Airport at 10:02 a.m., in line with the assertion.
Chakwera ordered a search operation and canceled a visit to the Bahamas, his workplace stated.
