Temperatures throughout Spain have hit report highs for October with the unseasonable warmth more likely to final over every week, the AEMET climate company stated Monday.

High temperatures throughout Spain resulted in three “record days of heat” that started on Friday with the mercury peaking on Sunday at 38.2 levels Celsius (100.7 Fahrenheit) within the southern city of Montoro close to Cordoba, it stated.

The earlier October report was set in 2014, when the mercury hit 37.5C within the southern city of Marbella.

“On October 1, it reached an all-time high for this time of year in practically the entire Iberian Peninsula,” it stated on X, previously Twitter, saying that almost 40 p.c of its climate stations had registered a temperature of 32C or larger.

The state of affairs was comparable on Monday, with the southern metropolis of Seville reaching 38.1C, AEMET figures confirmed.

“But the most extraordinary thing is that there are still quite a few unseasonably warm days left: we could have up to 10 more days of record heat,” it stated.

Although it has grow to be accustomed to hovering summer time temperatures, notably within the south, Spain has skilled an uptick in longer and warmer heatwaves, consultants say.

Spain, which had its hottest yr on report in 2022, has been within the grip of successive heatwaves this yr which acquired off to an unusually early begin in April, exacerbating an ongoing drought.

Experts say the recurring heatwaves, which have been getting longer and extra intense, are a consequence of local weather change.

The Iberian Peninsula is bearing the brunt of local weather change in Europe, with droughts and wildfires changing into increasingly more widespread.
