U.S., Russian draft resolutions on Israel-Palestine conflict fail at UN Security Council

Two draft resolutions individually proposed by the U.S. and Russia on the continued Israel-Palestine battle didn’t move Wednesday within the UN Security Council.

The council’s members first voted for the U.S. draft decision, which demanded humanitarian pauses in Gaza, condemned the Oct. 7 assault by the Palestinian group Hamas in Israel and referred to as for the “immediate and unconditional release of all remaining hostages” held by Hamas.

The decision obtained 10 votes in favor, with Russia, China and the United Arab Emirates voting in opposition to it.

U.S. envoy to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield stated the U.S. is “deeply disappointed” that Russia and China vetoed the decision.

She stated the U.S. decision was “strong and balanced,” and “that was the product of consultations with members of this Council. We did listen to all of you. We incorporated feedback.”

She additionally urged member states to not “encourage Russia’s cynical and irresponsible behavior by voting for its text, which was offered up at the very last minute.”

Russia’s draft decision, which demanded a humanitarian cease-fire, was additionally voted down within the Security Council after failing to get sufficient votes.

It acquired 4 votes in favor, two votes in opposition to and 9 abstentions. The U.S. and the UK voted no.
