US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Yemeni Prime Minister Ahmed bin Mubarak mentioned cooperation to cease Houthi assaults, the State Department stated Friday.

They exchanged views on the “importance of ending the Houthi threat to the Red Sea maritime security and surrounding waterways,” spokeswoman Tammy Bruce stated in a press release.

During the phone name, they shared issues concerning “unlawful “Houthi detentions of diplomatic, UN and NGO workers.

Rubio highlighted US President Donald Trump‘s government order re-designating the Houthis as a international terrorist group as a “critical step” towards curbing the group, stated Bruce.

“The Secretary said that he looked forward to continuing to support the Republic of Yemen Government in confronting the Houthis,” she added.

The Red Sea is a important international sea route, steadily used for oil and gasoline shipments. In current months, Houthi forces have focused Israeli-linked cargo ships within the Red Sea and the close by Gulf of Aden in solidarity with the Gaza Strip, which has been below an Israeli offensive since Oct. 7, 2023.

Yemen stays mired in one of many world’s worst humanitarian and financial crises, fueled by practically a decade of struggle between authorities forces and the Houthis.

The struggle in Yemen has claimed over 150,000 lives and has led to one of many worst humanitarian crises globally, leading to tens of hundreds of extra deaths.
